FLOOD EMERGENCY

There are places that, over time, stop being simply places.
They become people, faces, streets, homes, communities with whom we’ve shared struggles, hopes, and small and great steps forward.
For Apeiron, Nepal is all of this.

That’s why we are following with deep concern the serious emergency that hit the country on August 26th, when in Rasuwa district, on the border with Tibet, a massive flow of water, ice, rocks, and mud occurred.
Our first thoughts go out to the people and communities affected.

Many of the places hit today are places we know well. After the 2015 earthquake, Apeiron was on the front line of the emergency response and, in the years that followed, in the long path of reconstruction. We worked alongside communities, supporting families, women, boys and girls, and accompanying them through recovery.

Today too, we want to be there.

In these hours we are in contact with our network in Nepal and have already begun responding to the first requests for support, directed at the most vulnerable people, including pregnant women and families in especially fragile conditions.

At the same time, together with our partners and local institutions, we are identifying the area in which to launch a protection intervention aimed above all at women, girls, boys, and adolescents, who in emergency situations are exposed to particular risks.

The intervention aims to:

• identify the main risks and protection needs present in the communities;
• create safe spaces for women, girls, boys, and adolescents, where they can find a listening ear, support, and moments of social connection;
• offer psychosocial support to children, adolescents, and families;
• strengthen prevention and protection from gender-based violence, exploitation, and human trafficking;
• provide dignity kits and menstrual hygiene products to women and girls who need them;
• network local services, to ensure the most vulnerable people have rapid access to the help they need.

It is to support this work that we have decided to launch a fundraising campaign dedicated to the emergency in Nepal.

The funds raised will allow us to respond to the most urgent needs and to support, in close coordination with the government and together with our local network, the activities that will be identified as priorities: from direct support to families to essential goods, from safe spaces for women and children to psychosocial support, all the way to protection interventions and building recovery pathways for the affected communities.

And we don’t want to stop at the first emergency phase.

As we learned after the 2015 earthquake, when the emergency disappears from the news, the needs of people and communities remain. That’s why we want to be able to contribute to the following phases as well: to recovery, reconstruction, and the return to a safe and dignified life. Now help us be there!
